The countdown a fan keeps
Twenty-four doors, one behind every December night, and a game-day ornament inside each. Open one, hang it, and by Christmas the tree has a season on it.

01   Why it lands
It is a box of things, not a box of chocolate
Most advent calendars are finished by Boxing Day. This one leaves twenty-four ornaments behind, and every one of them has a loop on top and a place on the tree. The countdown ends and the decorations are already half done.
Doors that open
Twenty-four separate doors with a thumb notch on each. No perforations to tear, no tray to tip out — it opens like a small cabinet.
Enamel, not plastic
Each piece is metal with colour filled in and a clean rim, so it catches the tree lights instead of sitting flat against them.
A loop on every one
They come ready to hang. Straight from the door to a branch, no hooks to thread and no ribbon to tie.
Comes back out next year
The box is part of the gift. Pack the ornaments back into the tray in January and the whole thing is ready to run again.
A close grid of all twenty-four ornaments in the set, each numbered one to twenty-four, from a silver star and a helmet through a jersey, a stadium, a pennant and a cowboy boot to a snowflake and a small decorated tree
All twenty-four, laid out in the order you will open them.
02   How December runs
One door a night, that is the whole ritual
DECEMBER 1ST
Set it out
Open the lid, stand it where everybody walks past it. The mantel and the kitchen table both work.
EVERY EVENING
Find today’s number
The doors are numbered left to right, so the next one is always where you left off. Children work this out fast.
THEN HANG IT
Onto a branch
Straight onto the tree. By the twenty-fourth the branches you use most are full of the month.
The red side of the calendar box filling the frame, its twenty-four numbered doors picked out in gold with a small star above each number, one to twenty-four
Twenty-four doors, numbered in gold, in a fixed order.
03   What is behind them
Helmets, jerseys, and the odd one nobody expects
The set runs the length of a season rather than repeating one shape twenty-four times. Expect the kit first — helmets, jerseys, footballs, a stadium bowl — and then the pieces that make people pick them up: a tailgate drum, a pickup, a pennant, a snowflake in team colours.
The full tray of twenty-four enamel ornaments in a deep red velvet insert: a helmet, a jersey, a football, a stadium, a mascot, a drum, a tailgate grill, a scarf, a pennant, a boot, a snowflake and a small Christmas tree
The tray, before December gets to it.
The helmet
Silver face mask, team stripe down the middle. Usually the first one somebody claims for their own tree.
The jersey
Sleeves, collar, number on the chest. Small enough to hang, detailed enough to read from across the room.
The stadium
The bowl, the roof line, the field inside it. The one that gets hung at eye level.
The tailgate set
Drum, grill, pickup, scarf. The ones that are not really Christmas at all, which is exactly why they get kept out.
04   Where it lives
Somewhere it gets seen every day
The mantel, lid open
Standing open it reads as part of the decorations rather than something waiting to be unwrapped, and the ornaments can sit along the shelf in front of it.
The tree, one branch at a time
Hang each one the night you open it. By the last week the tree has a month of small reveals on it and nobody has had to dig out the decoration box.
The desk or the fan cave
No tree in the room? The ornaments hang just as well off a shelf bracket, a lamp arm or a pin board.
The office desk, in early December
It solves the office gift in one go, and it gives the people around you something to open over your shoulder for three weeks.
Three ornaments hanging on a lit Christmas tree: a silver helmet, a large team star and a brown football, all with enamel team colours and a hanging loop, pine needles and warm lights around them
Helmet, star, football — three doors into December.
05   What arrives
One box, already full
Nothing to assemble and nothing to fill in. The tray is loaded, the doors are shut, and the whole thing is ready to be handed over on the first of December — or wrapped and handed over early, which is what most people do.
The open calendar standing on a mantelpiece with garland and stockings around it, its twenty-four ornaments lined up along the shelf in front of it and a lit tree beside it
Ready to display
It stands up on its own and opens flat, so it works as decoration from the moment it comes out of the parcel.
A father and son at a wooden table with the calendar open between them, the boy holding up an ornament he has just taken out of door eight while the father holds another, ornaments lined along the front
Better with two people
The person who opens the door rarely gets to hang it. Somebody else is already reaching for the tree.

Bought it for my husband, who is impossible to shop for. He opened the first door on the first and then made a point of calling me into the room every single night to show me the next one.

The ornaments are heavier than I expected — proper metal, not printed plastic. The helmet and the stadium are the two everyone picks up first. My tree is now about sixty percent one team.

We did it as a family thing, one door each night after dinner. The doors are small, so the ornament inside is a decent size but the numbers take a second to find. Worth it for the ritual.

Put it on my desk at work and half the floor stopped by to open a door for me. The tailgate grill ornament started an argument about whose grill is better. Best impulse buy of the month.

Kept the box, put everything back in the tray in January, and it is sitting in the cupboard ready for this year. That is more than I can say for any other calendar we have bought.

Gave it to my dad on the twenty-eighth of November so he would have it ready. He pretended not to care, then sent me a photo of the tree on the twenty-fourth with all twenty-four on it.
24 days, 24 ornaments
The tree fills up, one door at a time.
The countdown is the part everyone remembers, but the ornaments are the part you keep. One door a night, one branch at a time, and a season that ends with something still hanging there in January.
